Chapter 16
After a hot shower, they sat on the couch as Eli explained his frustrations about the day. She’d heard about the case on the news. Senator Cronin’s morning interview was picked up by the local stations and had already made national news with FOX, a station that favored the senator and the advertising dollars he spent with their marketing department.
Eli filled her in on the gaps—including Mia Perez—the story that was deemed unnewsworthy.
“That’s bullshit. You’re telling me the Perez girl was the first to go missing and last to be interviewed?” Havana’s Cuban accent flared.
“It’s not right,” he said, shooting to his feet with an idea. “Let’s go.”
Havana questioned where with a look.
“Supposedly, the reason the interview was put last was because Preck had trouble communicating with the mother, but you speak Spanish.”
“That’s the only reason?”
“It’s what we were told, but this whole investigation is being tainted by Cronin’s status. We shouldn’t be working a missing person’s case, but he requested Preck and I work the case,” Eli explained, shaking his head.
“Since when does a family member get to request which detectives they want working their case?” Her face soured. “That doesn’t smell right!”
“Will you help me interview Mia’s parents?” Eli asked.
