Chapter 49
Whyte told Eli she was okay with spending a few years in traffic then taking her retirement, and that things could be worse. It was apparent the fight had been stomped out of her, but for Eli, there had already been too many casualties. He renewed a vow that nothing would tear him away from the case. He would work it until the last missing girl was found or until he was dead.
The sky had cleared and the humidity was back as he merged onto the interstate heading south. Hot air batted his face through the broken window. His pants absorbed the rainwater that had drenched his seat, and his Tahoe was beginning to resemble a demolition derby vehicle rather than a new member of the fleet. He imagined parking it in Benderson’s driveway and setting it on fire once he was finished with the case.
