Eli held two bags in his left hand while he fumbled with his keys to get his front door open. He set the bags down on his kitchen island and removed his badge and gun from his belt and laid them on the kitchen counter.

From the first bag, he pulled out two small frames, took their backs off and inserted the pictures of his mom and Mia Perez. Closing them, he placed the frames upright in front of him and stared at them for a long while before tears began hitting the granite surface below him.
